SECTION ONE: Installing PhotoGIF
SECTION TWO: Using PhotoGIF
SECTION THREE: Where To Find More Documentation and Help
SECTION ONE:
Installing PhotoGIF:
PhotoGIF is an Adobe Photoshop file format plug-in. Unlike Adobe
Photoshop filter, acquire and export plug-ins it will not work with
other popular programs that support the Adobe Photoshop plug-in interface.
The plug-in is based on version 1.0 of the Adobe Photoshop file format
plug-in interface and should be compatible with versions 2.5.1 through 3.0.4
of Adobe Photoshop.
With Photoshop 2.5.1, simply place PhotoGIF in Photoshop's 'plug-ins' folder
before opening Photoshop. If Photoshop is open when you place PhotoGIF into
the 'plug-ins' folder it will not be loaded until the next time you start Photoshop.
With Versions 3.x of Adobe Photoshop there are 6 folders inside of
Photoshop's 'plug-ins' folder. You need to place PhotoGIF inside the
'File Format' folder, one of these six folders, before opening Photoshop.
If you place PhotoGIF in the 'File Format' folder while Photoshop is
running PhotoGIF will not load until the next time you start Photoshop.
After PhotoGIF is installed Photoshop 2.5.1 will by default use it to open
and save all GIF files. 'Save As' in Photoshop will allow you to set file
options such as transparency, interlacing, and GIF version.
SECTION TWO:
Using PhotoGIF:
PhotoGIF provides capability to save images previously converted to
indexed color, bit-map and gray-scale modes in Adobe Photoshop as Compuserve
GIF89a or GIF87a files. Transparency and interlacing options are present for
saving as GIF89a. Interlacing options are present when saving as GIF87a.
There are two methods available for designating the transparent area of
a GIF89a file. The first is by alpha channel.
1: Select the portion of the image that is NOT to be transparent.
2: Save the selection to an alpha channel using the following menu
commands: 'Select' 'Save Selection' 'New'
3: If you are saving the image as a transparent GIF89a for the first
time, you will have to use 'Save As' from the 'File' menu. This
will make the PhotoGIF save options dialog appear. If you have
previously saved the image as a transparent GIF89a file using
the alpha channel method, you may simply 'Save' the file and
PhotoGIF will use the last set options for the file. This way the
transparent area of the image may be easily changed by editing
your saved alpha channel and image channel as you would normally in
Photoshop.
4: The default choice in PhotoGIF's save options dialog, if an alpha
channel is present in the image, is the alpha method and the default
alpha channel is #2. If the alpha channel you wish to use is different
you will have to type the channel number into the edit text box. Any
channel from 2 to 16 may be used in Photoshop 2.5.1, however,
in Photoshop 3.x the alpha channel must be #2 and the option to save
as " PhotoGIF" will be disabled if the image file has
more than one (#2) alpha channel. All alpha channels will be discarded
when you close the file, but PhotoGIF will create an alpha channel mask
for the transparent area of all transparent GIFs it opens. This in effect
is the same as your alpha channel you are using for transparency being
saved with the image.
5: If you also want to save as interlaced, the default choice, just click
the "Yeah, sure..." button. If you do not want to save as interlaced
uncheck the option for interlaced first.
The second method for designating the transparent area of an image is by color
picker:
1: If you are saving the image as a transparent GIF89a for the first
time, you will have to use 'Save As' from the 'File' menu. This
will make the PhotoGIF save options dialog appear. If you have
previously saved the image as a transparent GIF89a file using
the color picker method, you may simply 'Save' the file and
PhotoGIF will use the last set options for the file.
2: If there are no alpha channels in the image file the default choice
will be by color picker. The default color is that of the top, left
pixel in the image. To pick a different color click on the default
color in the save options dialog and a color picker dialog will appear.
Select the color you want for the transparent color and click OK. The
color picker dialog will close and the color shown in the save options
dialog will now be the color you picked.
3: If you also want to save as interlaced, the default choice, just click
the "Yeah, sure..." button. If you do not want to save as interlaced
uncheck the option for interlaced.
You may also save a GIF89a image as interlaced without transparency by selecting
the "None" option from the transparency methods group of radio buttons.
We have added support for interlacing to files saved as GIF87a, so now the check
box option for interlaced is available at all times.
You can control the color that PhotoGIF remaps the transparent area to if the
alpha method is used by entering an RGB color value in the three edit text
fields that appear when the alpha method radio button is on. This is a new
feature that was suggested by several of our users. In a browser that correctly
supports transparency changing this color will have no effect on the display of
transparent images, but it can be used to preserve the background color of your
Photoshop documents.

Where To Find Additional Documentation and Help
More extensive documentation on PhotoGIF can be found at the PhotoGIF homepage
in the online manual section URL: http://www.aris.com/boxtop/PhotoGIF/manual.html
It is much more detailed and contains many screen shots, which we hope our users
will find to be a useful addition to the PhotoGIF homepage.
Technical support is available by email to boxtop@aris.com to both unregistered
and registered users. Telephone support is also available to registered users of
PhotoGIF.
We have tried hard to anticipate and answer questions about PhotoGIF, but if you
have a question that is not answered in the documentation please don't hesitate
to email it to use. Every question gets an answer. We try very hard to make sure
that PhotoGIF is the best supported shareware application on the market.
